Laws of Attraction (2004) Movie Review – C+

Laws of Attraction, 2004: Rating PG-13 – Romance

Subtitle: How drunk do you have to be to get wed?

laws attraction movie stillWho to look for:

Julianne Moore, as lovely as ever, and in top form with her little expressions of disgust, concern and being offended.

Pierce Brosnan -handsome guy. He didn’t have much to work with, but he was a good foil for Ms. Moore. At one point, they both argued in a strangely quiet way that was refreshing.

Nora Dunn – who started out in SNL. She has a small bit as a judge, which is a part that suits her… v nice.

Main Plot

Two divorce lawyers meet and sparks fly. “Laws of Attraction”, get it? For some reason, Audrey keeps resisting, while Daniel keeps pursuing her. But who would say no to Pierce Brosnan? Seriously.

Things move along until bam, they have to go to Ireland for one of their court cases. Momentum stopped. Slapstick, annoying scenes begin, and even their chemistry shifts.

I did notice at the beginning of the movie that one of the producers was the Irish board. But was this version of Ireland the best they could come up with? Lovely scenery, but the people were a little…simple. Like Appalachia.

Unanswered questions and spoilers:

These lawyers had never even kissed, let alone made love. So the only way they could get married was to get drunk? Blergh. Way to kill the romance, and to be honest, bad writing, to put off the consummation just a little bit longer. Was this a nod to Catholic conservatism?

Also, be sure to watch deleted scenes and the alternate ending. This is one of the few big kiss julianne mooretimes when what was edited out was better storytelling.

Common Sense Media says:

There’s no reason to see this movie.

Amazon gave it 4 stars. Various opinions:

  • Who doesn’t like pierce brosnan…in anything!
  • I never get doing a rev. on a movie. If you seen it and you liked it, and you’re looking to buy it and go for it. It’s a movie everyone has personal taste. I liked it, it was a good price so I bought it
  • I wanted it for long time, but it was difficult to find. Got it at last. Watched many years later. Still great. No blood. No monsters. A great comedy. Wonderful actors.
  • Good approach to legal better understanding

It’s a wrap
