How Stephen King Gave Las Vegas a new Slogan

How Stephen King has changed sales, PR, and marketing.

Obviously,  this cartoon, while being about marketing, is really a take on the great Stephen King movie, The Green Mile. The original quote is: What happens in the Green Mile, stays in the Green Mile. Just saying the words makes me want to watch it again!

And talk about marketing…a well written script ( or book, in this case) lends itself to being quoted, even without critics! (More about Visual Marketing here.)

The Green Mile is about Death Row at a certain southern prison, and the fascinating things that happen there one year. (Yes, it’s a little bit of supernatural, but the kindness of the prison guards is actually one of the most shocking parts.)

The guards say this mantra to all the prisoners;  the convicts in this ward will be executed, so the intent of the prison guards is really to reassure them. The condemned men’s secrets, fears, and tears will stay private. Forever.)

By the way, I did this cartoon  before the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce did their “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” slogan. Copycats.

But although the cartoon is about keeping mum, I think marketing people can’t keep a secret! They explain everything, in minute detail. Isn’t Scott Adams’ Dilbert always poking them for that?

You may wonder if I’ve done other cartoons with this wonderful, powerful movie quotation. The answer would be: yes.

My latest cartoon at PsychCentral: Do you wonder what very personal things people might be saying about you?

And I also have a bad review about cookies in my dessert blog.
