vintage coloring book

I just wanted to list this because it has a great old-time vintage cover, which, unfortunately, has water damage on the top, so I can’t sell it on Amazon.

Collectible coloring books are rare, because usually they are on cheap paper, and, of course, colored in. But this was published by the famous children’s book publisher of the 1920s and 1930’s, Platt & Munk, so it has better quality paper.

From Loganberry Books:

Watty Piper was known as the “house name” for publisher Arnold Munk of Platt & Munk Publishers.  Under this name, many anthologies and folk tales were published during the publisher’s heyday of the 1920s-1950s, including many stories illustrated by the popular Eulalie , Lois Lenski and Holling C. Holling

Mr. Munk died in 1957, and the company was bought out in the 1970s. But it was 1924 when they bought the rights to The Little Engine That Could, which is where many picture book lovers discovered the publisher! Over 2 million copies even in the fifties.

The rest of the book is just dotted lines to color and a sample palette of colors above each one. Below each color image it says, A Picture to Color, Copy or Trace.

That is pretty misleading, however, because no crayons or watery watercolor can match the original brilliant colors in these books!

Plus…the drawings themselves arent very interesting.

About 16 pages.

Where to find

Loganberry Books, above, might have a copy.
ebay – fun to get a bundle!
Amazon – fast – this is the original book!

Oh, Laughing Elephant has reissued it on Amazon. Laughing Elephant has been republishing images and books for many years – most of which are in the public domain. I would want to see these in person, to check the quality, but it’s an excellent price for a boxed set of 3.
