Griffith Park: Like Disneyland, but neither fun, nor happy.
There’s been a lot of press lately about Griffith Park’s move to get historic-cultural status – that is, be a designated Cultural Landmark. I thought, why all the fuss and the flurries of emails? It seems obvious that a park with a rather lurid past (look up Colonel Griffith and prepare to learn), that is over 100 years old, (which means 800 years old in Los Angeles time) is LA’s most valuable piece of land anywhere. Duh. But it’s not so easy. Actually, Griffith Park is a hot box of contention, and there is a lot of drama going on! It’s like writing a script, with too many quirky characters…

The arsonist is a shoeless person!
Not that I’m one to call people names. Some people are referring to him as a transient. Some call him homeless. Me, I like how Councilman Tom LaBonge describes our gp visitors with poor money management skills: “As we all look around at each other here..and down at our shoes and socks… we’re living a step up from some people. Not everyone has shoes. That’s why we still allow barbecues in gp!” The shoeless person has a name and a face: Gary Allen Lintz, alleged arsonist. Alleged, my arse. He was arrested Saturday. (although our own Kristin Sabo reported it here in comments a half hour earlier!) He was convicted…

Tom LaBonge says the shoeless people are more important than Griffith Park.
There were tv crews and everything at the meeting on arsonists tonight. Carolyn Ramsay, of Councilman LaBonge’s office, was at the door handing out important pieces of paper. I reached for one, and she said the agenda was on the seats. There weren’t any seats left, so I held my hand out to her again, and when I took one of the important pieces of paper, she took it back from me and said, “If you don’t mind, please just take one of the papers on the seats. These are for the press.” Do I look so very unimportant? Is it my blue guileless eyes? I wore a nice skirt…

How to catch an arsonist in Griffith Park!
Or, How cb Makes Every Fire a Photo Op. I mean, really, he looked like he’d been lugging the hoses himself the other night, didn’t he? Our councilman, also our fireman. Well, almost! I got this VERY last minute notice of a meeting tonight, in my comments: From: “LaBonge News” Date: August 18, 2008 4:39:35 PM PDT Subject: Griffith Park Fires Special Meeting Good Afternoon: Please join Councilmember LaBonge, Los Angeles fire officials and Griffith Park Rangers tomorrow evening to hear about the suspicious fires in Griffith Park over the weekend. They will present a brief update on the investigation and answer any questions you may have. Please join us…
