New source of water in Griffith Park! (Hands OFF, LADWP.)

George Grace, founder of the Griffith Park Natural History Survey, was also clever enough to find a new stream of water in the park!! (Well, the only stream, actually.) And he didn’t even have to use a divining rod. There is a subterranean stream under the Toyon landfill (garbage dump) in Griffith Park that the Master Plan Committee recently learned about…but that the Department of Public Works has apparently known about for many years. George sent out an email blast:  What a great thought, to have a meadow on top of Toyon landfill with a real free flowing stream! Javier L. Polanco, P.E. of the Department of Public Works wrote:…

Squirrel conquers Silver Lake AND the DWP.

Yes, that is a squirrel on the electric tower. He’s King of the World! Or at least, of Silver Lake. I rarely see squirrels in Los Angeles. A miniature train sign (or model trains, as they prefer to say to adults.) From here. Right away, without even saying who he was, he said he had some questions for me! He described himself as a “service person, to talk…

Two free things to do this weekend.

I liked this juxtaposition of the burned land in gp, and the lush river. Bring your camera! And for very little gas money! (This part works better if you’re me.) I can see a glimpse of the LA River from where I live, and have been asking friends for YEARS if they want to go down in there with me, but there were no takers. It looks foreboding, cementy and maybe a little dangerous from a distance. The sliding slopes look distressing, like you could roll a body down there and no one’s the wiser. Not to mention all the pictures I’ve seen of ugly graffiti, trash, dead animals, etc.…
