Other bad fires
Sometimes I write a post, but I don’t publish it. I guess I’m not a run-to-win blogger. I’ve had a lot of new visitors lately, looking for news about fires in general, or maybe confusing Griffith Park with San Diego. (And in spite of the fact that I seem to have disappeared from Technorati. Thanks, guys. I don’t understand what a ping is, either.) I feel so bad about so many people losing their homes, and so many many acres of land burned. One thing I can’t stand is how the news makes such a production, such a drama and such a spectacle of destruction. I turned my head away…

A reader was inside the park the night of the fire
I got some interesting emails from a reader who was INSIDE the park the night of the fire. He writes: I was up in the area around Dante’s View from around 7 – 8 pm on the day the fire broke out and saw Dante’s View go up in flames. What struck me is that nobody but me was up there. Despite the fire roads up Mt. Hollywood and the fancy new water system in the park, not a single fireman was up there poring water down on the flames. I’m no expert, but it looked to me like the fire there could easily have been beaten down with a…

All day and all night, neighbors stood out on the deck watching it, and as it grew later, we realized it wasn’t going to stop that night, and some of us even wondered if we’d have to evacuate, even though we were a mile away. I turned on the air conditioner, which didn’t filter the thick smoke at all. It was like breathing through a sweater, and I wondered if I was getting enough oxygen. The LA Times had a pretty good blog up about it, that was really the only up to…

Don’t yell out fire in uncrowded Griffith Park
I can understand why homeowners have been nervous nellies about pointing fingers at the fire department, really I can. Who needs firemen most? Desperate housewives and homeowners. But the LA Fire Department did such a craptacular job in the recent Griffith Park fire that maybe it’s time for someone to point a finger. So I will. Photo by permission from losermike. He describes it as a compilation of several photographs. It has a foreboding look, and was how I felt about the fire. It did not entertain me. We saw the fire from the beginning, on the south slope of the Park near the 5. Actually, it was the sunlight…
