Restaurant chef with a ‘tude.

cartoon chef with attitude

Why do some restaurant chefs have such a big ego?

Are you into the celebrity cooking shows and competitions? I just read an article in the LA Times that it has changed people’s views of restaurants  and culinary positions. All the cooking schools in the area are overcrowded now, and hopeful chefs can’t get jobs as fast as they would normally.

Here they say you don’t need to go to culinary school, anyhow!

The esteemed Ruth Reichl

Personally, I’ve looked on good meals as an adventure ever since the Times ran the restaurant reviews of Ruth Reichl, also former editor of Gourmet Magazine and author of many cookbooks. If you think of eating out as a remarkable shared live experience, and a way to get to know your city and your companions in a wonderful new way, it becomes an adventure. And not something embarrassing, like being a foodie.:)

I wouldn’t say Reichl has an attitude at all. She deserves her kudos! But Paula Deen, from the Food Network, is an outspoken chef whom some might call over the top. As a result of one controversy,  Anne Rice,  in the LA Times says Dean was crucified. 🙂

Paula Deen: Chef with a ‘tude

Paula Deen is, of course, far more public than Ms. Reichl and she has the chutzpah to prove it!

Deen has owned restaurants for almost 30 years, and had TV shows for almost as long. She had a show on the Food Network for 14 years until she…wait for it…admitted to using racial slurs in social media. That didn’t keep her down! About a year later she opened her own TV Network, and has been going strong ever since. She’s appeared on other shows, including Dancing with the Stars in 2015, and even sells her own merchandise on evine.

Then there are her many cookbooks. Although some of Paula’s sponsors cancelled contracts over the racial slur controversy, her book sales soared! But oh, oh, another problem came up. Deen was criticized about her kids book, Cookbook for the Lunch-Box Set, and the amount of sugar…and cheesecakes! included in it. She defended herself, as well she should. A year later, Deen admitted that she herself had diabetes. 🙁

I think we can agree that Paula Deen has had a colorful life, and probably thinks “she’s all that!”
